How early can you get morning sickness?

There's a story in my family that my mother knew the day after she had that she was pregnant because she was immediately ill and throwing up the next morning. Is this possible or an exaggeration? If it is an exaggeration, is it still possible that it did happen very early (like less than a week or two)? Would such a thing be hereditary if so?
