Is a little bit of knowledge a bad thing?

I have heard this saying before, and I am beginning to see how it is so true. In modern times, EVERYONE has an opinion about who God is, and what his church is. Could it be that the little knowledge that people have about God (via personal study of scripture) is actually deterring them from being closer to Him and His church (Catholic Church)?
